Instructions for Downloading, and installing Powerpoint viewers

  1. The first step is determining if you can view slideshows. These slideshows are designed for use with Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 only, and will not work properly on computers other than IBM compatibles. Viewers for other platforms may be available, however you will research that on your own for now. Only links to the Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 versions are supplies here. Windows NT, and for workgroups may also work with these versions, so you may want to give it a try. If this is what you have, carry on with this procedure.

  2. Follow the link for the downloadable version of the Microsoft Power Point Viewer you require

    • Windows 3.1 (This file is 533KB in size and may take 30 minutes or more to download. This page also has good instructions for installing the viewer that should be printed for lated.) Be sure to pick the right version, or you could have problems later. Create a new directory for the file, and remember it! We will ask questions later, or actually your browser will.
    • (Win3.1) As mentioned, you must now download the Winzip Program. Again, print out any instructions you will need for installation. Versions for both Windows95 and 3.1 are available. Be sure to choose the one for your system. After installation, unzip the .zip file and install it.

    OR

    • Windows 95. (This file is 1,545 KB in size and may take one or more hours to download on a slow internet connection! 14.4KB) Be sure to pick the right version, or you could have problems later. Create a new directory for the file, and remember it! We will ask questions later, or actually your browser will.
    • (Win95) Next run the .exe file you just downloaded. You did remember the name of the directory, didn't you? It will then install itself onto your system. Answer any questions it may ask you.

  3. (Win95 and Win3.1 with Netscape) At this time you can look at these instructions, or view the instructions below. Between the two, you should be able to set your Netscape to view Powerpoint slides.

    • To prepare your browser, [Netscape for example] go to the Options menu and choose preferences.
    • Select the tab that says Helper Apps.
    • Next, choose the button to Create New,
    • For mime type, enter slideshow, and for subtype type, enter Power Point.
    • For the extension, enter .ppt.
    • For the action choose launch, and Browse for the Power Point Viewer you just downloaded and uncompressed.
    • After that, choose OK
    • Go back to the options menu and Save Options to make this permanent.
    • At this point you may have to exit and restart Netscape or whatever browser you have to make the changes active.

  4. Check to see that your installation was successful by clicking on the Icon to see one of the slideshows from the course. If it fails the first time, exit Netscape, restart it and try again. Write down any error messages you receive, and if it doesn't work the second time, send E-Mail to your instructor.
For future zip files, you may download an evaluation version of Winzip for Windows95, or Windows 3.1. If you have downloaded a Winzip file earlier on this page, there is no need to do it again. This is for those who have not downloaded Winzip yet.
