Application refers to the ability to take what has been learned in one situation and use it in a new situation; for example

  • Applying generalizations or principles to new situations
  • Using previously learned concept or generalization to organize new data
  • Applying previously learned information to a new situation.

This is more complex cognitive behavior than recall of knowledge or comprehension. It involves the ability to solve a problem in a situation where it is not specifically given what knowledge or understanding is required. The challenge is to select the appropriate knowledge and understanding and apply them in reaching a conclusion (or other product) with little or no help from authorities (instructor).
