Comprehension is defined as the ability to grasp the meaning of material.
This may be shown by

  • Translating material from one form to another (words to numbers) .
  • Interpreting material (explaining or summarizing).
  • Estimating future trends (predicating consequences or effects).
These learning outcomes go one step beyond the simple remembering of material, and representing the lowest level of understanding.

Comprehension is the ability to understand what is being communicated and to make some use of it beyond verbatim recall. The focus is on understanding the literal message and to be able to change the message in the mind to make more meaning of it or to extend the meaning.

Translation:

  • Having the ability to put a communication into other forms or terms.
  • Stating the message in a shortened form
  • Drawing a picture or other graphic or symbolic representation
  • Saying it in own words

Interpretation:

  • Having the ability to reorder ideas into new meaning in the mind of the learner; to comprehend the parts of a communication as seeing the relationships between the parts.
  • Reorder the parts
  • Distinguish between the main ideas and details
  • Understand their relationship

Extrapolation:

  • Having the ability to extend beyond what is given.
  • Having the ability to go beyond the literal communication to make predictions or estimations for the future or for new situations not included in the original.
  • Predicting possible consequences, trends, or effects
  • Identifying implications.
