The Keeping Up Web Site
This useful web site is maintained by
Stephen Bell, Director of the Paul J. Gutman Library at Philadelphia University. "The Keeping Up Web Site seeks to identify free sources of information. A few subscription-based sources may be identified - and that will be noted. Please keep in mind that some of the free sources will include advertising; most of it will not be offensive and subscribing to these resources should not lead to spamming." Both students and instructors can benefit by adding this site to their bookmarks and by cons From

Ghost-written blog
In the New York Times recently there was an article about a political candidate, Fernando Ferrer, with a blog that turned out to be ghost-written. The clue was an error in the candidate's educational background. The crux of Patrick D. Healy's story: Jen Bluestein, a spokeswoman for the Ferrer campaign, said the candidate did not submit a written item but rather "passed on some ideas" to an aide, who then wrote three paragraphs and posted them in his name. The prose has... From

Upping the embarrassment
I'm conflicted about blogging about this because I don't know how to do it without sounding self-righteous. But I also think we generally need to surface stuff like this. So here goes. Last week I was invited to attend a day of discussions about a tech topic with cultural and economic consequences. But, because I hadn't responded to the first invitation (the msg got lost in my spam stream, I think), the organizers sent me a followup that included the list of about 20 attendees. The list of attendees is amazing. A fantastic group. I'd love to spend time with... From

Reflections on the tagging economy. ... or is it the economy of tagging? Categorization (to give tagging its more formal name) is a key cognitive process, and we may find that it will grow in importance as part of our theories of learning. Great article -- must read. Thanks to George for pointing to it.

Making the Best Use of Time
Dept. of Getting Things Done
Choosing The Task to Fit The Time. By
Patrick Rhone Not too long ago, I was asked by a client of mine how long it would take to complete a certain large project. After thinking about it for a while, I gave what I thought was a fair estimate given all of the parameters, possible hurdles and building in time for contingencies. The client then asked me if I could do it faster than that. They asked if I could do it in about a third of what I had esti From

Best practices in questionnaire design. Recently so many people have been asking me to review their questionnaires and surveys that I thought I’d update a document I first created several years ago which sets out some essential best practices for creating good questionnaires. While written for training evaluation, the guide is applicable to any surveys. 1. Ask: “Why are we doing this?” What do we need to know? Why do we need to know By

Learner-created learning. I have always been convinced that one key to future success in web-based learning lies in the notion of the prosumer. Prosumers produce what they consume, and it seemed to me back in the mid 1990’s that creating their own content was something that people really enjoyed doing. I saw this in the fact that e-mail was the most-used application of the Internet. I saw it in the fact that AOL members By

RSS: a simple contrast
Two news listings on our campus. The library's includes an RSS feed, so I republish it automatically in two other campus sites. The university's front page does not include an RSS feed, so I can only republish its content if I a) remember to visit and notice a good item, and b) cut and paste the piece into one of my sites. Nobody has the time for such a thing, of course. The contrast couldn't be simpler. Too bad about the main news from the university sitting there, underused like that. From
