Early photographically illustrated books This Web site, which is part of the British Library's Collect Britain digitisation project, makes available 1,463 images of early photographic illustrations. Photography, as a new technology, was an exciting way of illustrating books, and was increasingly used after the 1840s. Later in the century the photographs themselves became the focus of such publications. The images presented here cover a vast variety of subjects, including: towns and buildings in Britain and Ireland; portraits; scenic views and landscapes; works of art and architecture; figure groups; and many more. Collect Britain is a major digitisation project undertaken by the British Library. Durham : echoes of power Through this Web site, which is part of the Collect Britain digitisation project, the British Library makes available images from its collections illustrating the history of the Palatinate of Durham. Deptford plans and drawings This Web site, which is part of the British Library's Collect Britain digitisation project, makes available a collection of 130 drawings and plans of Deptford and the area around the royal docklands. This area formed the administrative headquarters of the Royal Navy from Tudor times onwards, and by the seventeenth century it was home to the area of densest industrial activity in England. Crace collection of maps of London This Web site, which is part of the British Library's Collect Britain project, makes available digitised versions of the rich and valuable Crace collection of maps and plans of London and its environs. This collection was formed by Frederick Crace, interior designer to George IV and Commissioner of Sewers, in the first half of the nineteenth century and numbers around 1,200 items. Of these, 853 have been digitised for this site. The maps, plans and views cover the period from the 1570s to the 1840s and record the development of the City of London, Westminster and their suburbs. Evanion collection of ephemera This Web site, which is part of the British Library's Collect Britain digitisation project, makes available images of items from the Evanion collection of nineteenth-century ephemera. This was formed by the ventriloquist and stage magician Henry Evans, a.k.a. Evanion, and the British Library holds 5,000 items from the collection. Caribbean views Caribbean Views, which is part of the Collect Britain Web site made available by the British Library, presents digitised images of sources relating to the history of the British West Indies in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Over 100 documents are represented by 1,203 images. These images include: views and illustrations; maps; manuscript accounts; and many printed texts.
