Phenomenology online Phenomenology Online, created by Max van Manen, serves as a wonderful introduction to the various aspects of phenomenology. The site makes available full-text articles, dissertations, an annotated bibliography, brief biographies and photos of eminent scholars, a glossary of frequently used terms, and, most impressively, an interactive map of the various aspects of phenomenology. Carnegie council on ethics and international affairs Established in 1914, the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs is an independent, non-partisan organization dedicated to reseach and education in ethics and international policy. The national museum of history, Sofia The Web site of "The National Museum of History, Sofia" is in English and provides information on the over 650,000 exhibits in its holdings, making it one of the largest history museums on or in the Balkans. Access details, openiing hours, and contact information are all available and there is a very useful events calendar, for those planning to visit the musuem. The museum of the occupation of Latvia 1940-1991 The Web site of the "The museum of the occupation of Latvia 1940-1991" is in both Latvian and English. It tells the story of the occupations of Latvia in the twentieth century until 1991, when the state gained independence from Moscow. Established in 1993, it aims to be both informative and a memorial to those who "perished, who suffered, and who fled the terror of the occupying regimes." Early modern philosophy texts Created by the eminent scholar, Jonathan Bennett, this site is a fabulous resource for students of early modern philosophy. Bennet has taken key primary texts of early modern philosophy and made them more accessible through slight modifications to the texts. Merleau-Ponty circle The Merleau-Ponty Circle is an organization of scholars and students interested in the thought of the influential french philosopher, Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The organization convenes annually for a conference and periodically publishes a collection of papers. H-Albion : the h-net discussion network for British and Irish history H-Albion is an online discussion group for British and Irish history. Discussions centre around research, historiographical debates and especially teaching methods at undergraduate and graduate level. Membership is free, and is needed to participate in the discussions. Non-members can search discussions by date of contributions ('logs') or thematically ('threads'). They may also access the teaching materials for British History course syllabi (survey, period and specialized). The book reviews are also freely available. Saints and angels "Saints and angels" is a Web site run by Catholic Online and is a searchable database of saints and angels. The site unfortunately also has pro-life messages among its adverts. This is a useful site for those interested in saints and angels, and there is a calendar of saints' days. Saints can be searched by name, feast day, and by subjects of which they are patrons. Doctors of the Church, those saints accorded special recognition are also listed with details of their lives and works. There is also a rather biased account of stigmata and attempts at explanations. Society for Danish Jewish history The Web site of the "Society for Danish Jewish History" is in both Danish and English, however the Englsih version is extremely sparse. The society promotes the study of Danish Jewish history and regularly holds meetings and lectures - details of which are on the site (although this section had not been updated recently at the time of cataloguing). The society provides a focal point for work on the Jewish communities of Denmark and thier experiences. Welsh biography online Welsh Biography Online is the freely available electronic version of the Dictionary of Welsh Biography. Both the Welsh and English language volumes have been converted into electronic text. IntraText digital library The "IntraText Digital Library" Web site makes available hundreds of texts in over 35 languages ranging from Sardo to Tetum. The works cover a wide range of subjects, including literature, religious, philosophical, legal and scientific works. BBC vocab / geirfa This BBC site, BBC Vocab/Geirfa - 'A Window into Welsh/Goleuni ar yr Gymraeg', provides a web application which, when enabled, displays a tooltip translation of highlighted words on the BBC's Internet pages in Welsh. The translation is based on the dictionary developed by Canolfan Bedwyr, University College of Wales, Bangor. The application also displays relevant links to the BBC's Welsh language learning pages. The ACW was established in May 1995 and represents the Welsh institutions and organizations involved with the administration of archives. Anglo Saxons : King Arthur : British resistance legend These seven BBC History Web pages discuss some of the evidence for an historical figure behind the Arthur legend. The author, Dr Mike Ibeji is a Roman military historian and associate producer of Simon Schama's TV series 'A History of Britain'. All the relevant early medieval historical sources are mentioned. However, it should be noted that the 'Historia Brittonum' cannot be attributed to Nennius with certainty, contrary to what is implied on pages 2 and 4 of the article. Royal historical society The Web site of the Royal Historical Society provides information on the major learned society for History in the UK. The RHS supports the RHS Bibliographies, whcihc is an authoritative guide to works on British and irish history, spanning a period from the Roman era to the present day. It is updated three times a year and contains articles from over 500 journals. It is also available on CD-ROM. There is also information on the site about publications, lectures, conferences, as well as news and initiatives. Members can subscribe to a regular newsletter. Early medieval Britain and Ireland The website Early Medieval Britain and Ireland provides information on the British Isles in the sub-Roman period. It features electronic texts of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Gildas and Nennius in English translation. There is also some information on Bede. The 'Commentary' section mainly consists of quotes from the secondary literature on diverse topics related to the Dark Ages. Prague city archives The home page of the Prague City Archives is in Czech with a summarised English version. It provides information on the archives, their opening hours, access requirements, and location. The Prague City Archives site also hosts conference announcements and calls for papers, which is useful for postgraduates and academics working on Central European history or Czech history.
