How To Lose My Business
Yesterday I set out for one of our local malls in search of a new wristwatch. Yes, there are any number of things that I'd rather do than go shopping, such as getting a root canal, being beaten senseless by a band of malicious midgets, or even getting a hair cut. But, the back of my previous watch literally fell off last week as I was heading out the door to Las Vegas, and the cheap-o emergency replacement I picked up at the drug store was far from satisfactory. I'm a bit persnickety when... From

Hitchhiker's guide
Will everyone enjoy the Hitchhiker's movie? I can't say. It may help if you know at least the brief first book in the series -- I read it aloud to my 10 year old daughter recently, and we both enjoyed both the book and the movie quite a bit, but her 8 year old sister also enjoyed the movie without having that advantage. Best feminist moment -- it's a small thing, and I won't spoil it by telling the scene, but as the father of daughters and the spouse of a woman strong in body and mind... From

Everything bad is good for you is good
I just finished Steve Johnson's new book, Everything Bad is Good for You, and not only do I think it'll climb the best-seller lists, I'll be glad when it does. [Disclosure: The book comes out May 5. Steve sent me bound galleys because we bonded at a conference last year. I was a major fan of his well before that.] EBIGFY is a persuasive essay. Forget the didactic assignments you got in English class. I've been reading Steve's stuff for some time now and I think I've discovered what makes his writing style so good: He thinks well. He turns... From

Here is an interesting new-to-me genre possibility: an event wiki. Around the upcoming American Library Association conference in Chicago an unofficial
ALA Chicago 2005 wiki has been launched, providing conference and area information and tracking the blogging of the conference. The instructions on the front page are a good example of clear technical writing, though people seem to need a nudge... From

Why Businesses, and School Administrators, Don't Blog
Earlier this week I was contacted by a freelance writer who is working on an article about why school administrator don't blog. His question was simple. Why aren't more school district and school administrators blogging? For fear that tipping my hand here will drastically cut into the magazine's sales (as my many loyal readers might choose not to buy the magazine after reading the response here) I won't go into any great detail on my answer. But, the question is one that I've thought about in... From
