A Banner Decade
In October of 1994, Zima, Club Med, AT&T, and other brands paid to place 468x60-pixel "banner" advertisements atop the pages of HotWired.com's website. It was the genesis of online advertising as we know it. A decade later, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers, U.S. advertisers spent $9.6 billion on online advertising -- an amount greater than the whole outdoor advertising industry, about 80 percent the size of the magazine ad industry, and half the size of the radio ad industry. Moreover, online ad spending grew 31.5 percent from 2003 to 2004, th From

Faceted Classification in the Government of Canada
There are two major ways to organize resources. One way is to assign each resource a position within a classification system. Dewey Decimal and the Library of Congress classification systems work this way. But there are many such ways to classify resources. And some resources might not fit easily into a single category. Another way is to look at the properties of a resource. Who is it by? What is it about? Each of these properties - or 'facets' - is given a rigourous description, sometimes using a canonical vocabularity. Classification then becomes a matter of organizing by common pr From

Article about academic blogging which, while it notes the paucity of academic bloggers, speaks positively about the potential benefit. What I liked was the description of why academics blog: to enjoy a freedom they cannot find in traditional academic writing. The author also points out that an academic blog writer is likely to reach a much wider audience than one who publishes only in academic journals. Via

AP's Days of Web Freebies Coming to an End
The Associated Press will begin charging media outlets to post its stories, photos, and other content online. Tom Curley, AP president and CEO, told the AP annual meeting Monday that "the need for online licensing is clear."The AP has allowed most of the 15,000 news outlets that buy its content to "re-purpose" it on the Web at no extra cost since 1995.The new pricing policy will take effect January 1, 2006, Curley said. It's not clear how much it actually will cost the news outlets, though, because the AP intends to offset the cost of the new online licensing fee (. From

Both of those pieces are entertaining and somewhat useful for all ages. So what advice do you have for teenagers? From

Melatonin anyone?
As I prepare to get on yet another plane — and I have a cold that has pushed me into the bottomless well of self-pity — I'm thinking about the three trips to Europe I'm making in the next couple of months. They're all red-eyes. I don't sleep well on planes. I have on occasion dosed myself with dramamine because it knocks me out without leaving much of a hangover. Some people I know swear by melatonin to reset the diurnal clock. I've never tried it. Any suggestions? Alternatively, if you'd like to upgrade me to business class, I'd be... From
