North By South:The African-American Great Migration This website is the product of a six-year project at Kenyon College. Students studied the cultural effects of the migration of African-Americans from the South to the North in the early twentieth century. They focused on migration from specific points in the South -- South Carolina, the Mississippi Delta, and Birmingham, Alabama -- to New York City' Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland.
