Arthur and more
Sorry about the downtime. Dan was trying to fix the comments to make it so I could easily delete bad posts, but it broke the whole thing. I just put back the old one. So we should be fine, and so should our friend, spammer bozhang. I am getting better at editing him out - it's just a matter of whether he can post viruses, etc., that threaten my server and get me in trouble. I'll deal with it. Your news and reward for continued visitation: 1) I'm doing a new column in the FREE magazine,

Trusting errors
It's interesting to me that The Guardian's article article about the soldier kidnapped in Iraq - the one who turns out to be a GI Joe action figure - refers readers to its blog for the details of the correction. Why the blog? Perhaps because the blog lets the Guardian talk in a less guarded, more human voice. If the correction were noted in the usual way, could the Guardian have written "Sick as they are, such hoaxes have happened before...," for example? It makes sense to me: Fallibility is the mark of humanity, and, oddly, it's one of the... From

Italian TV blog
Marco Montemagno has a show on Sk TG 24 (Sky's all news channel) about the Internet blogging. He writes that it's the first time in Italy that a news channel has: Run a blog Made videos of the show freely available (via Coral CDN p2p and blogtorrent) Made the audio available via podcasting (Feedburner enclosure) "Asked users to send material, participating in the news creation, so that we'll try to realize a sort of "Gillmor grassroots jornalism" principle." Sounds very cool. Good luck, Marco!... From

Take the car
Another year, another planned fare hike for the TTC. What really bugs people about these prices is how they now have to pay more to stand at a bonechilling bustop waiting for a late bus, which invariably is crowded and filthy. Here's my two tokens: most people take the TTC because they have no other choice. The management is not trying hard enough to get people to take it by free will. Their advertising slogan mocks me every time I get on a subway car: "TTC saves hassle, time, and the environment." One out of three ain't bad, but it's time to work on the first two. Podcast test (again)
I just updated my Word Press installation to version 1.22 and it killed the WP 1.2 enclosures hack. Or at least it wounded it: my SQL database still had the extra tables, as I discovered after much trial and error (sometimes it's good to assume you're wrong, and sometimes it ... From

The big spam unit
I have complicated multi-tiered spam filtering technique I use, the result of which is that I have a folder called "suspect" that I manually check to make sure there's nothing in there for me. These days, with pitchers and catchers reporting in less than two weeks and football shortly disappearing until fall, baseball has been on my mind. Too much on my mind in fact, because I've been clicking on emails about "the Big Unit" in my suspect spam folder. Needless to say, they are not about Randy Johnson. From
