As I noted on Brian's post pointing here, I wholeheartedly agree with you but I'm not seeing where the "extension" is happening. This reads to me as a way of describing the idea of a virtuous circle of social/intellectual capital... something that I first learned about from John Seeley Brown and which I've referred to often ever since because-- outside of commerce-- the fundamental driver of social networks.

Each of your examples is an expression of creating, sharing and banking social/intellectual capital. The coin of the reciprocal realm.

James

I can't say there's a think I disagree with here. I'm looking at a project to do some design work for our newly adopted D2L installation, but it's beginning to appear akin to putting lipstick on a pig.

I particularly like that you're not drawing distinctions between learning and non-learning. It's your personal network and you'll probably leverage it in many ways.

Tony Karrer is on about similar open learning network and community thoughts at http://elearningtech.blogspot.com/2009/03/lms-and-social-learning.html

Reminds me that it is spring and time yank the dead edtech weeds in my feed reader... Which defintely is not used. Much of what you describe as almost a natural way of being online; yet from practice it still feels more exception than rule.

Yet it's more loose and sloppy than reciprocity that suggests a balanced exchange-- and that us what Ames it interesting; the surprises.

Stephen Downes

It's not about reciprocity. It's about sharing. Completely different concept.
