This includes providing a forum for discussion around the Eprints Application Profile, also known as the Scholarly Works Application Profile (SWAP) and for other existing and future application profiles created to describe items of scholarly communication. |

Background
The description of research papers is becoming increasingly important in the context of institutional repositories, aggregators and other networked information services holding information relating to the outputs of the scholarly communications lifecycle. Producers and consumers of data need to exchange richer metadata than has previously been possible with 'simple' Dublin Core™. In 2006, JISC funded Julie Allinson (UKOLN) and Andy Powell (Eduserv Foundation) to develop an application profile for describing scholarly works, principally to support the Intute Repository Search project.
In the context of this Community a scholarly work is a scientific or scholarly research text (as defined by the Budapest Open Access Initiative), for example a peer-reviewed journal article, a preprint, a working paper, a thesis, a book chapter, a report,etc.
By broadening the Community to cover 'scholarly communications' we hope to embrace and discuss other forthcoming work on resources used for scholarly communication that go beyond the traditional print-based media, including images, time-based media and datasets. .

Resources
- The Scholarly Works Application Profile developed for describing scholarly works comprises an application model based on the FRBR entity-relationship model for bibliographic works and a set of metadata properties for describing each entity. It has been developed in line with the DCMI Abstract Model and can currently be expressed in the eprints-dc-xml format or as simple dc using the dumb-down algorithm provided.
