I agree with Jenny; perhaps we should call them Massive Online Open Conversations and eliminate the misunderstanding.

I found out about PLENK as I was doing research for an in-service series last semester on Personal Learning Networks. I joined the MOOC with about 5 weeks left in it and found that it was too-little too-late for me to get involved. A clearly published schedule (that I knew about in advance of the start of the course) and some expectation setting about potential being minimized for late-starters would have helped me.
