Re: Becta's Process for Giving New Shape to the E-Strategy for Education in England
Employer driven education policy - yes, that seems to call the tune in the UK. The funding body for FE colleges (The Learning and Skills Council) wants to see courses provided to suit employers' needs and employment opportunities and I'm not sure where the aspirations of the student fit into this. The example a principal gave a few years back was that if there was a shortage of plumbers in our city, plumbing courses would be provided. End of story, perfect solution. Then the institution started advertising 'You can be what you want to be'. The 2 principles seem to contradict, however, as long as you focus on vocational skills, highlight employment opportunities, emphasise transferrable skills and 'keep it real' your course (music in my case) is allowed to run!
