1. at some point there will be a lawsuit against the university for exposing a.intellectual property b.user login data

2. the other issue you will face is the inability of the university system to leverage its content to make money.
a. without the ability to bar a non-paying or unregistered student, universities will lose their ability to pay professionals to teach.
b. then universities will only exist by the milk of human kindness.
why pay to go to university if all the knowledge is out there for free?

3. a better approach would be to get your departments to give you a directory on your internal web hosted account to publish.
a. students will only be able to get to the pages if they pass the login screen for university.
b. institution can control access

4. open source knowledge is better. im all for it. but how will professors make a living?
a. the music industry just went through this. there is no more full time employment in music. be cautious.

That may have worked for an higher ed institution, but in K12, going around the district IT shop to host instructional materials, specifically student data, externally could cost them their job.

- Lawrence (Sun, 15 Mar 2009 10:47:40 -0400)

And yet, I work with really bright kids in higher education that somehow survived this system. Is it really that bad or are we just frustrated that there are so many "average American" parents who raise "average American" kids.... and we don't like what "average American" has become?

Many networks online are NOT open--at least in terms of the culture. Different perspectives/points of view not always accepted. Creates homophily. I see this as a big issues in the edublogosphere, for example.

Wonder how best practices rise out of the noise of everyone sharing ideas and opinions. I guess the onus is on the learner to filter all the information and decide what is useful.
