ScribeFire and edublogs.org not talking after upgrade
This is the problem with application-specific APIs - when one or the other upgrades, communications are interrupted. I've seen this with module or plug-in based architectures generally, from Firefox to Moodle to WordPress to Drupal. Just a note of caution regarding this model. Modular is good; proprietary (and hence endlessly variable) breaks that good. Mike Seyfang, Learning with the Fang, July 30, 2009.

Is Open Research a Good Thing?
My answer to the question is "yes". And not just because it results in better research (although it does). But because, by allowing us to see how researchers conduct their practice, it makes it easier to learn how to be good researchers. That's why examples such as the ones cited here are valuable. 21cLearn: Al Upton Podcast
Al Upton - whose 'Minilegends' website was the subject of controversy recently - presents at this conference in South Australia. Mike Seyfang kindly provides us with a recording, as well as talks by himself, Graham Wegner, Alison Kershaw, and others. Mike Seyfang, Learning with the Fang, May 2, 2008.

CEGSA Reflection - VISION for School of the Future
I've been on the road all day today, so I'll keep the newsletter a little short (and a little odd and opinionated, but sometimes it comes out like that) and catch up tomorrow. Anyhow, in this item, Mike Seyfang reflects on the CEGSA conference. Which reminds me that I've seen more than a few people comment on the most recent Harry Potter movie, which is pretty clearly a (caustic) commentary on educational reform. So of course our local media depicts the film as being opposed to fascism, which is a nice way to pretend the film is not criticizing what it's criticizing, but which is revealing in its own way. CEGSA Day 1 Report
I am working late tonight - very late - as I will be speaking by videoconference to the CEGSA conference currently being hosted in Adelaide, Australia. Mike Seyfang offers this report from Day 1, including a summary of Gerry White's keynote. "Gerry finished his talk with a little 'report card' for our education system. If my kids brought home a report card like that I would kick myself up the arse for being a lousy parent." Um, hm. Graham Wegner also comments on the keynote. The Cancer of DRM Infects iTunes PLUS
Mike Seyfang asks what he did wrong. The answer, of course, was to use iTunes plus. I may really like my MacBook, and really like my iPod (even though it died when I dropped in on the plane from Japan). But I will never use iTunes, not u8ntil I can download some five cent MP3s from it. Mike Seyfang, Learning with the Fang, June 18, 2007.
