Labatt says: OK, I'd like at this point to welcome all of you - a bit late - to the Painted Porch OnLine conferencing facility
Nan says: How do you get on the conference board?
Labatt says: This may be the first - and certainly it's the largest - national educational online conference of this sort
Labatt says: I'd like to begin by introducing our key players
Fredvw says: peterg needs help geting to the plenary
Labatt says: Kane will help the people who are lost out there get here :)
Labatt says: My name is Stephen Downes and I'm a distance education specialist from Assiniboine Community College
Labatt says: Kane is Jeff McLaughlin, my partner in the creation of the
MAUD. Kane teaches philosophy at the University College of the Cariboo.
Labatt says: Terry is Terry Anderson, who is an Associate Professor and Alternative Delivery Specialist at the University of Alberta
Labatt says: The three of us will be presenting the sessions today.
Labatt says: Margareth is Margareth Peterson from the University of Saskatchewan - she's the one who collected the cash and organized the registrations :)
Labatt says: We have an opening session - which you're in now - a closing session, and five breakour sessions planned
Labatt says: To see the agenda, and to see which session is where, please type: agenda
Labatt says: I will wait just a moment for you to read the agenda
Margareth says: Labatt, I received the message The agenda has not been set.
Labatt says: ack... that's right, it erased when we rebooted.
Labatt says: drat. OK, here's the agenda (good thing I wrote it down)
Margareth says: oh well, we should have seen it when we did the tutorial
Labatt says: The first three breakout sessions are as follows:
Labatt says: In the Metcalfe Room, Terry Anderson will present 'Getting the Right Mix'
Labatt says: In the Bank Room, Jeff McLaughlin will present 'Student-Teacher Interaction'
Labatt says: In the Rideau Room, Stephen Downes will present 'System Requirements'
Labatt says: These sessions will last about 1/2 hour each
Labatt says: The second set of sessions will then proceed
Labatt says: In the Carling Room, Terry Anderson will present "Evaluating Students On-Line'
Labatt says: in the Queen Room, Stephen Downes will present 'Advantages of On-Line Learning'
Labatt says: And finally, in this room, Jeff mmclaughlin will start the MAUD tour
Labatt says: If you get lost looking for the various rooms, you may view a map of the conference facility by typing: map
Labatt says: Now Warren, you asked earlier whether notes are available. We don't expect all of you to try to do screen printouts.
Labatt says: Al the sessions are being logged - including this one.
Warrenw says: Great thanks Labatt
Labatt says: These logs may be viewed at any time in the library (which is just off the lounge).
Labatt says: In addition, complete logs of the seminar will be posted at the world wide web site for the seminar
Labatt says: http://www.assiniboinec.mb.ca/www/isiit/cade.htm
Labatt says: Please allow us 24 hours to transfer the logs to the web site.
Labatt says: I'll pause at this point and ask whether there are any questions so far.
Labatt says: Now I would like to talk briefly about what this session is and why we are here
Labatt says: Well, I should say that 'chat' messages are not logged, only 'say' messages are logged
Labatt says: That's one reason we are encouraging people to use say
Labatt says: Anyhow..
Nan says: how do you get to the Bank room?
Labatt says: This seminar is an experiment in On-Line learning
Labatt says: For directions, please type: map
Labatt says: the real content of this seminar is not so much the sessions, as it is the entire experience of attendig this seminar
Labatt says: Your perceptions and experiences are very similar to what a student would experience in on-line learning
Labatt says: Indeed, we have put a lot of the lessons we have learned to work in the preparation of this seminar
Margareth says: Agreed, Labatt. we do need to know how our students will experience this
Labatt says: Jeff McLaughlin will talk more about those experiences in his session
Terry says: Ray's questions is what we are hear to ponder.
Labatt says: One of the major things we have tried to introduce is the idea of multi-modal learning
Labatt says: One of the major premises in this MAUD is the idea that one method - eg., First Class - isn't sufficient
Gregt says: It is difficult to understnad how students would be able to matser both the process and content in this format.
Labatt says: That is why we set up this conference with the web pages, the list server and the MAUD
Mum says: I'd like to see how this would work in the context of a specific subject.
Labatt says: The particular sessions will examine in more detail about the role of the MAUD in on-line learning
Labatt says: jeff mcLuaghlin's tour will (I hope) show you some applications in the field of bioethics
Gregt says: it seems that the mec
Labatt says: That concludes my opening remarks - are there any comments or questions before we go into the breakout sessions?
Margareth says: Just one; are the break-out sessions happening simultaeously or one after the other?
Labatt says: OK... I would ask then that you attend the sessions in the various rooms
Labatt says: Please try to distribute evenly
Mtumpane says: do w have to choose one session or do we do them all sequentially?
Gregt says: Is it possible that there
Daverogers says: Nice but I ramain unconvince if a MAUD's utility. Couldn't a telephone conference call have done this in a few minutes?
Labatt says: The first three sessions are starting now (simultaneously)
Paulm says: What is the timing of tie sessions
Gregt says: A practical
Labatt says: Well, yes Daverogers, but we're only part way into this
Gregt says: How do we get to another room
Gretchen says: a teleconference call would be far more expensive. This is much more practical!
Labatt says: type 'hall' to go to the hall, type 'sidehall' to go to the sidehall, then type the room name
Warrenw says: make mine an ale

At this point everybody leaves. About a half hour later, Jeff's group assembles in this room to begin the tour. - ed
Kane says: what is different about the MAUD is that it is a space, that it is a PLACE forpeople to go, not just a means of typing on a computer.
Kane says: so just as you would get lost at a new campus you may do that here too, just look at the directions on teh bottom of your screen or tell me.
Kane becomes the moderator.
Keng says: What will the tour consist of?
Kane says: I'll just explain the reasoning behind the rooms etc.
Kane says: ready?
Kane says: you can type: 'yes :)
Margareth says: yes
Keng says: I'm ready.
Warrenw says: yes
Kane says: okay
Michael says: yes
Kane says: follow on
Janeb says: wahere did everyone go?
Warrenw says: they left without saying where to go
Jeff's tour departs and is gone for a half hour. After the end of all the sessions, the group gathers together for the final session. - ed Labatt says: here we all are again :)
Dinah says: hello everyone
Taylor says: hello
Peterg says: hellp
Peterg says: hello
Labatt says: hiya peterg -- you're in the right place
Peterg says: getting here was a cinch (with a little help!
Labatt says: been touring in the lounge, eh Kane?
Mum says: do you have any Australian wine
Kane says: first stop
Peterg says: melt
Labatt says: OK, we're here for the final wrap-up session
Kane says: sorry, I've been on a Washington State kick lately

Labatt says: OK, we don't have a set agenda for the final session
Labatt says: This is your turn to talk and our turn to listen
Labatt says: As i mentioned before we broke off, these comments are being logged, so your record of your thoughts and experiences would be really useful
Labatt says: Why don't I start this by asking Margareth to describe her reactions to this seminar
Mtumpane says: I would have liked a clearer set of conventions for ordering the conversation - I found things sometimes got chaotic
Dinah says: I enjoyed the experience as a newbie, but found the lack of threads to be a problem for learning purposes
Warrenw says: i think i learned but if i may perhaps a window feature to keep my comments separate from all others would assit in dialogue
Labatt says: or everyone :0
Margareth says: I've say I found it very interesting and I guess right now my reactions are mixed.
Lindak says: i found it rather slow
Margareth says: I think that I can see the one would develop a feeling of intimacy with other members in a class
Mtumpane says: ditto to WarrenW' comment re a sperate window for your own dialogue as you are tytyping
Warrenw says: i toofound it slow
Taylor says: i thought it was intereseting
Margareth says: but I also find the conversations somewhat chatoic
Dinah says: I agree with Margareth - I felt personalities emerge
Terry says: Re Windows I'm using a MOO client, that does provide some of those features.
Peterg says: there seems to be a great opportunity for humour here that is lacking in other tools. The emotes are a great idea.
Terry smiles broadly
Margareth says: its sometimes like being in a conversation where I'm constantly interrupted.
Paulm says: I feel the technology show potential and am looking forward to following it's progress to user friendly environment.
Margareth says: It says to me that we are going to learn how to converse in a MAUD
Labatt says: OK, let me toss out a statement & get your responses...
Mtumpane says: I think the tool has real potential. if some of the obvious surface problems can be workrd out
Margareth says: conversing in a MAUD means being patient and waiting for others to respond; keeping one conversation going at a time.
Labatt says: It really seems to me that the future of distance education lies in some sort of similar technolog
Labatt says: perhaps not a maud per se, but an online interactive facility like this
Kathim says: I learned some useful information, got some firsthand experience, but it is too slow and I guess, sigh, unstructured for me. I told Terry earlier, we ran into a similar situation for a workshop session using videoconferencing. People seem to crave structure and I guess, efficiency.
Labatt says: because of costs, and because virtual reality is an important componet
Labatt says: what do you think?
Mum says: Is there any chance that we could participate in a specific scenario like the euthansia debate?
Taylor says: well, youc an use sa
Taylor says: eek, i mean i think you're correct
Taylor says: yeah there is, the start for that one is in kane's virtual office :)
Labatt says: jeff, perhaps it might be worthwhile scheduling a tour of the interactive areas int he future, where we're not competing with seminars
Dinah says: for some students, for some courses, some of the time
Kane says: my turn
Jo says: a specific debate could
Peterg says: I think we need an aray of tools close at hand so that we can switch modes as needs arise. e.g. from cmc video to chat and so on.
Mum says: how do we get to Kanes office?
Kane says: re: slow: this is part of the dynamic today given that everyone is new here, soI know that I purposely went slower so that you wouldn't get overwhelmed. re: chaotic conversations. Yes this is an issue that can be worked out with some rule
Lindak says: I would be interested in a tour in the future
Kathim says: I would be interested in a tour as well.
Kane says: for example, to keep side discussions, I use tell sometimes, e.g. to answer students personally without interrupting the flow of the says...
Kane says: new people have a tendency to focus only on one means of communicating, hence the chaotic element
Warrenw says: kane one thing on your tour , if you leave without saying your destination i get lost quickly
Mtumpane says: there still needs to be some ordering of the main conversation, I think
Sylvia says: Can short paragraphs of presentation be readied to upload or does each line need to be typed in as it appeared today?
Kane says: in regards to my euthanasia case study, I will post directions on the Conference Main Board for you to access whenever you want
Taylor says: how can you order a conversation though?
Labatt says: We can easily do paragraphs of presentation, aslo, we can impose rules using the software. We chose not to do either because people aren't used to the environment yet.
Margareth says: I think there seems to be a lot we don't know about using a MAUD
Labatt says: It's hard to present the whole concept in two hours
Margareth says: it appears as though it can be used much more efficiently than our experience today.
Taylor says: practice, fortunately is fun
Terry says: Sylvia, At Diversity University MOO they have a slide show capacity which allows text to be created and them displayed by the teacher, much like a PowerPoint type face-to-face presentation.
Mtumpane says: In response to Taylor's question...you could have the moderator direct the order of questions/responses
Labatt says: We have that as well, terry
Labatt says: To get an idea of how much more structuring is possible, type: help moderate
Taylor says: yeah, it is hard though because you don't want to lose anyone in th course of your talk... and if someone has a pressing question they need clarified it oculd be a problem if they can't ask it
Labatt says: To get an idea of how we can present a lot of info at once, type: show log
Kane says: of course, this real time interaction is just one element
Jo says: be more useful sho log
Jimz says: For distance learners, what are the major advantages of MAUD over something like Netscape chat?
Labatt says: You could read the entire log of the plenary session by typing: show log all (caution, though, it's 17 pages long)
Taylor says: the whole environment makes this far more engaging, and because the maud is all set up students could go through any particular module at any time they wanted
Sylvia says: Thansay can Netscape chat be limited to eg a class?
Taylor says: for example some may need to go through something 2 or 3 times or even more
Taylor says: but with a simple chat set up they couldn't do that
Labatt says: To achieve full interactivity you would need something like a MAUD which interfaces with netscape
Labatt says: If such a system could be built, great, but it still seems to be a way off
Labatt says: My difficulty working with Netscape has been to achieve full interactivity... most 'Netscape Chat' sites we see require that you refresh your screen to see what has been said recently -- this is really inefficient
Sylvia says: Oh, you mean it will not be ready tomorrow, but check at the end of the week?:)
Labatt says: I wish
Kane says: a simple advantage is not everyone has access to Netscape. That aside, the MAUD creates an environment to go to, to meet, to use a variety of systems, chat doesnt do that
Labatt says: Give me a few months and a full development environment
Labatt says: Well, I think we're winding down, so perhaps we should call it a day
Labatt says: We will keep the maudl list running, and the web site running, and of course the maud will be here
Kane says: and also point out that we can continue these discussions on the BBS or MAUDL
Labatt says: Full transcripts will be available both here and on the web site
Margareth says: Many thanks to Labatt, Kane and Terry (and all the behind the scenes people for making this possible.
Mtumpane says: how much longer will our ID's here be active?
Sylvia says: THanks I found this most informative and can see that there are some definite advantages to othyer modes. I will watch for advanced in maud environments!
Labatt says: We hope that if you have comments or questions in the next few day that you'll use weeither the maudl list server or the board here in the maud to pose them
Taylor says: a real long time
Labatt says: Your IDs here will be active indefinitely
Terry says: Thanks for coming all - a great learning expereince!!
Labatt says: So please feel free to log on any time
Mtumpane says: Many thanks to all of you!
Labatt says: yes -- we of the maud learned a lot by doing this -- thank you
Margareth says: by everyone
Mtumpane says: BFN
