The Next Hundred Years of Science
Mind-bending presentation by Kevin Kelly, one of the Long Now Foundation talks at Fort Mason. In the next 50 years, science will experience more change than we've seen since 1600! Notes by Stewart Brand: Recursion is the essence of science. For example, science [...] From

Weak Ties
Chris Heuer, the brain behind BrainJams, and I met for a rambling conversation about social networking and learning at T-Rex in Berkeley. It's fun when two people share similar worldviews but have different bases of experience to work with. Whcih brings me to the subject of this post, another attempt to twist the doctrinaire rules [...] From

Work, work, work
Lordy, the sacrifices I make for my work. I believe that location has a tremendous impact on the creative process. The re-write of my book (improved!) is due at the end of the month, so I'm leaving the cozy Internet Time Bunker overlooking San Francisco Bay and flying due east as far as I can [...] From

Home from Barbados
Dreams of the island are replaying in my head. Barbados is a great spot for informal learning. Barbados is colorful. Banks is the local brew. The water is warm enough that you can walk right in. This giant mill crushes 500 pounds of sugar out of every ton of sugar cane 24/7. The Atlantic side of the island [...] From

Onward!
R - E -L - I - E - F! Tomorrow morning the manuscript of Informal Learning, all 500+ pages of it, goes into a FedEx box and thence to my editor in Chicago. I started this project a year ago. It has consumed a lot of energy. I have read a lot of books [...] From

Power to the People
My favorite game back in the days of DOS was Electronic Arts' Pinball Construction Set. It let you play a decent game of pinball but what really set it above the rest was that you could create and save your own pinball tables! All it took was drag-and-drop to add new bumpers, flippers, and black [...] From

Schadenfreude
At the end of Feburary 06, Forbes opined that, Google is without doubt a stock market phenomenon. It has a market cap, as of writing, of $115 billion. This is equivalent to ten General Motors (nyse: GM - [...] From

Stephen Downes - Magdalene Islands
I decided that I needed to go away for a while and so spent three weeks on the Magdalene Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a place I've always wanted to visit. This is a Flickr photoset from that time - as of right now I've uploaded twelve photos, but I have many more which I will add over the next few days. My time on the islands meant a lot to me and I honestly wish I were back there - I'm trying to find that place, you know, where I can have a meaningful life, where I can be completely engaged and committed and passionate, where I can matter and be important. Stephen Downes - Distributed Learning
No, I have not come out of my hiatus - I have a very long way to go before I can think of that. But I did promise in my hiatus FAQ that I would honour my speaking committments, and so here I am in Tennessee to give a talk. Here are the
slides and
MP3 audio. The talk addresses the usual e-learning 2.0 point of view, but I also reflect a bit on the purpose of what we are doing. It's little enough, and I need to say more - I do want to thank everyone for their kind words and su
