danah boyd: detailed notes on Revenge of the User talk. The technology will not solve the social, but each design decision made in the technology affects the social. There is no formula though, no clear algorithm. No social scientist can predict what social behavior will emerge from each technology you build. But we can make sense out of what

[etech] Mobile Life (keynote)
Pertti Korhonen from Nokia is talking about the effect of mobile computing. What do we need to unleash the potential? We need to simplify the user experience of rich environments, for example by bringing touch into the picture: Point and touch your mobile device. He touches his mobile device to a book. It makes a connection to an RFID tag. Now it can open a web site, push an app to his device, or it can push info to his peers. Ellison v. AOL: New Clarity in the Blaming Game?
What does an Internet Service Provider (ISP) have to do in order to avoid paying the piper for enabling copyright infringement? Does the "notice-and-takedown" procedure under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) provide a square deal for everyone involved--the ISP, the copyright holder, and the user accused of copyright infringement? Derek Slater, Ernest Miller and Jason Schultz grapple with these questions and others in their responses to the ruling yesterday in Ellison v. Robertson et al.; if you, like me, haven't

Cautious Welcome for FTA Deal
Australia has a new copyright regime, courtesy of a new free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States. Commentators, such as this cited here, are calling it similar to the American's Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which has of course been pilloried in these pages. Other critics are warning that the agreement will mean "huge increases in copyright licence fees paid by Australians" for content. "This is literally a Mickey Mouse cultural shift," (ANU law professor Matyhew) Rimmer said. "

    Colleges Using RSS
(via Dan Mitchell) From an article that I can't get to in the Chronicle of Higher Learning comes this quote: Jeremy Trumble, Web-services manager at RIT, says that students there are getting the benefits of RSS without even knowing they're using it. Every student has the opportunity to create a Web portal that presents a personalized version of the university's Web site, similar to a My Yahoo page. During the customization, students decide which information they would like to have regularly updated. That tells an RSS read

    Antitrust Biting Oracle; Hypocrisy Ascendant?
In announcing and defending the Microsoft sellout, Ashcroft, who is carrying out President Bush's policy, has used high-sounding policy principles as his motive even though there plainly were political reasons as well. For them to now discover the virtues of antitrust would look like a totally political move with overtones of retribution -- hardly the first time from this crowd, of course. But no one should believe they've suddenly discovered that it's a good idea to have a serious competition policy for the technology industry.
