For the new year
I ran across a quotation, attributed to Anthony Robbins, that seems good for starting a new year: If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten. It might be good to type that onto the syllabus for one or both of the writing courses this semester, since writing courses usually ask people to build on their strengths and try some new approaches. I will be curious to hear what the first year students say about it, for one thing, but also what the older...

The Roadmap to Redesign
We can forgive, I guess, the Center for Academic Transformation for its use of a now clichéd phrase in its title. The point of the plan is to test a new model "that partners experienced, successful institutions with new institutions and relies upon best practices and learning materials with a proven track record in particular disciplines." Guidelines for participation, reports Carol A. Twigg in an email, will be published on February 1, 2004. By Various Authors, Center for Academic Transformation, December, 2003 [

How Boring is the E-Learning Market
Reflections from an e-learning conference held recently in Britain. Cynical reflections. "The industry stages very predictable events where: publishers argue that there should be more emphasis on e-learning content; software companies argue that there should be more emphasis on tools; and learning theorists want to see more collaboration between learners and more attention on 'pedagogy' in general." Yup. Some glimmer of hope: "Donald Clarke was brave enough to challenge some of the emerging e-learning orthodoxies, arguing that 'giving teachers new e-learning tools is not going t

Introducing... Curb Cut Learning
It took me awhile to decide if I really wanted to started a blog. In the past year I've seen many become copmletely useless and wanted to make sure I was ready to jump in with both feet. Two things helped me to decide: 1) this will help me to more systematically review and archive resources that I come across and 2) as far as I know, there isn't anyone else who has specifically tackled accessible distance education in the blogosphere. So if you're here, hopefully you can find something useful. Why Curb Cut Learning? You have likely heard of the curb cut principle- the idea that

Let's start with this: As consumers, we would not tolerate a different size and thickness CD for every recording label that required a physically different CD player to pay it, so why would we tolerate the equivalent in our courseware? This article on the accessibility of online learning materials written by Peter Paolucci for the International Forum of Educational Technology & Society makes a strong case for consumers to demand better adherence to open standards. Moodle and Accessibility
You may already be familiar with Moodle, an open source, modularized, social constructionist course management system started by lead developer Martin Dougiamas in 1999. It looks like the current version (1.1.1) has some basic accessibility features built in, but their road map for the next year is the really good part. By version 2.0, planned for early 2004, they are working towards xhtml transitional compliance. Right now they are planning on using some basic tables, but they will be easily replaced with CSS positioning. Then, version 2.1 is expected to bring basic support for SCORM packages
