Thoughts on Edblogger
Ed Blogger was a great chance to meet some really good people. I am consistently struck by the quality of the edblogging community. They are genuinely concerned with how to make education better, and their ultimate concern for students is always apparent. People who are new to this seem genuinely amazed at the level of collaboration and willingness to share ideas, but that seems to be the best part of it all. Pat did a superb job in getting this whole thing to come together, and IÂ’m already looking forward to the next one. Having said that

Learning Webs: Learning in...
This article explores how professionally oriented Weblog projects support the emergence of loosely coupled learning networks. We provide an overview of the technical infrastructure of this particular form of personal Webpublishing and the social ecosystems that emerge through current Weblog authoring practices. Furthermore, we suggest that some Weblog ecosystems can be conceptualized as learning webs. These learning webs appear to meet the specific needs of knowledge workers fo

Preserving the Internet's neutral core
The Internet, it's often said, treats censorship as damage and routes around it. Even before ICANN weighed in on Site Finder, ISPs and network administrators had begun to route around it. Ironically, one major network that reportedly opted out was the tightly controlled Chinese Internet backbone, prompting some observers to foresee an escalating arms race of blockages. We doubt that will happen. But recent events remind us that although the Internet was built to survive a nuclear attack, it may need some help resisting political and economic assaults on its p

Republican Energy Bill Blocked Over MTBE Lawsuits
The Republican-crafted energy bill was blocked from coming to a vote Friday in the United States Senate. One of the main issues that led to the bill being blocked was a series of provisions shielding corporations from product liability lawsuits over groundwater contamination caused by the gasoline additive MTBE. These provisions of the bill bring into sharp focus some of the more disagreeable themes of the Bush administration.

Decisiveness and Passion
In Heidegger's Children, Richard Wolin quotes Hans Jonas on why he should have seen Heidegger's Nazism earlier: it's embedded in Heidegger's talk of "resoluteness" and "decisiveness." Says Jonas, whereas Heidegger accused idealist philosophy of being a step removed from the world, one could accuse him of something much more serious: the absolute formalism of his decisionism, where decision as such becomes the highest virtue." (132) If this is right (and it's been too long since I read Being and Time to be sure), it means Heidegger gives us no way of distinguishing a "r

Social Networking for Business: Release 0.5
Once-moribund Silicon Valley is suddenly returning to life. On the one hand, there's the Google IPO; on the other, there's the company Google reportedly almost acquired HYPHEN Friendster, which just raised $13 million for a rumored $40-million valuation. Social networks could be the hottest thing since airline miles! Friends are cheaper to get HYPHEN though a lot more work to manage. Is it déjà vu all over again, with multiple companies signing up millions of registered users, and then looking around to see if anyone will pay?
