The power of visible loose ends
There is something I don't like about blogging: it makes all the loose ends visible. I usually have more ideas than time to implement them. Blogging is perfect for it: you've got a minute, you post an idea, a conversation develops, you follow it and think of writing a story to pull all the bits together and to reflect, but then next busy week comes and there is no time anymore and new ideas are getting written down. For me this was usual - coming up with more ideas than time to implement them. But blogging is changing it. Once ideas are written down I have a visible trace

Skype Problems Confirmed
Skype is a revolutionary voice-over-IP technology that keeps bringing attention to its many unique and impressive capabilities. The tools is in beta and it is free to use (PC users only). As I have been reporting before, Skype ability to provide a reliable quality audio connection over the Internet, may still be reserved only for those on a particular good Internet connection on even then not all the times. Michael Term of the Associated Press reports similar problems to the ones I have been writing myself about. Skype is really an exceptionally capable tool, but not so much because of...

"SPD setzt auf Investitionen"
WIESBADEN.

Oryon Interview about the Semantic Web
This interview with Dr. Frank van Harmelin from the November 2003 issue of Oryon is one of the best explanations of the purpose of the semantic web that I've seen. "Well, the idea of the semantic web is to extend the current web with additional information that will enable computers to understand web pages too. This does not mean that we propose to dump the current web and start all over again. The semantic web can best be viewed as an additional layer on top of the current web. In practice it means that a part of the content of current web pages must be adapted to make them interpretable

A tale of two Cairos
Microsoft's 2003 Professional Developers Conference (PDC) reminded some observers of the same event in 1993, when the hot topics were the Win32 APIs, a rough draft of Windows 95 code-named Chicago, and a preview of a futuristic object-file-system-based NT successor code-named Cairo. The hot topics this year were the WinFX managed APIs, a rough draft of a future version of NT code-named Longhorn, and ... Cairo. Now called WinFS, this vision of metadata-enriched storage and query-driven retrieval was, and is, compelling. Making it real wasn't then, and isn

Kudos to Wired and more
Wired's on a roll. In the October issue, they ran a page by Rebecca Harper that puts the effect of music sharing into perspective: The labels have released 14% fewer new CDs since 1999 and they've raised the prices 16% since 1997 (after adjusting for inflation). Yes, she says, file sharing has cost the industry money. "But what the RIAA doesn't want to admit is that the CD is reaching the end of its life cycle..." Then in the December issue (the one with Uma on the cover), they devote a part of a page to step-by-step instructions on how...
