Bush Pushes Controversial Cyber-Crime Treaty
Despite the fact that the U.S. is a non-voting member of the Council of Europe, President Bush is nevertheless pushing for Designed to address problems associated with trans-border law enforcement, the multinational treaty binds countries to establishing a minimum set of laws for dealing with high-tech crimes. What it doesn't do is ensure adequate privacy protection for citizens of the signing countries--or indeed, for any Internet user.

Mature Age Workers: Ideas for Action - public comment sought
Government and industry agree - Australia needs to put some effort into its 45-plus workforce. These people need to be encouraged stay in the workforce longer and to reskill continually. They'll need to be attracted to training that suits them and their employers probably need to be more enlightened about their capabilities and value. How do we do it? ANTA has been researching this issue, and talking to other government agencies and industry, including the Prime Minister's Business Community Partnership. The Golden Ruler
In the last 35 years, the world has experienced an unprecedented period of global inflation. From 1792 to 1915, the cost of a bag of groceries in America went unchanged, but from 1973 to 1982, the dollar lost over half of its buying power at the store counter. Since then, the dollar has shed another half of its remaining value when buying that same bag of groceries. Not to be outdone, the UK walked a similar path. From 1795 to 1910, prices didn't budge, but since 1973, the pound has lost almost nine tenths of its retail muscle. What is going on?

PR Wars Heat Up in Open-Access Publishing
This very brief item is a good survey of the conflict between open access and subscription academic publications. "The economics of scholarly publishing can best be described as broken and dysfunctional. Fewer and more powerful publishers are in ongoing struggles with their biggest customers, characterized by boycotts and dramatic contractual battles. Until the fundamental structural problems in the publishing industry are fixed, there will not likely be an end to the barrage of open-access alternatives. And it may already be too late." Not that the commercial publishers are standing still, as
