Blogging the League CIT conference
No, I won't be blogging hour-by-hour, but I thought I would add a few comments after arriving to the event today. The exhibit hall is very well attended by all the "heavys" in eductaional IT. Sun, CISCO, Dell, Gateway, Apple - all of the major hardware folks, but HP are here. Many software companies, such as Microsoft, Macromedia, WebCT, Blackboard, and many smaller players trying to get their products noticed - probably some very interesting and useful products. Several four-year universities are here (the League conference is focused on two-year colleges)

"Darn those padlocked silos"
Alan is blogging the League conference. He writes about one event he attended on developing critical thinking in distance courses:Oh, apparently all the content is inside Blackboard, so nothing the world at large can benefit from. Damn CMS padlocked silos. Comment: I'm more and more less and less at ease with what "we" are doing in online education. Many faculty are ignorant of the larger issues of keeping content behind the WebCT/Blackboard/eCollege, etc. firewalls.

How Will P2P File-Sharing Evolve Under Present Hostile Threats?
The RIAA has taken us on a tour of networking strategies in the last few years, by constantly changing the environment file-sharing systems operate in. In hostile environments, organisms often adapt to become less energetic but harder to kill, and so it is now. With the RIAA's waves of legal attacks driving experimentation with decentralized file-sharing tools, file-sharing networks have progressively traded efficiency for resistance to legal attack. The RIAA has slowly altered the environment so that relatively efficient systems like Napster were killed, opening up a niche for more decen

Serious Windows iTunes Bugs
Read this - I can verify that the bug they speak of is absolutely real. My computer hangs even when booting in safe mode. I can't find (and I don't think there is) a program aside from iTunes that can convert and burn my purchased AAC encoded .m4p file.  So I have an unburnable file. Also, for some reason, when I

Why care about non-zero sum games? Stopping the spread of AIDS would be a NZ game. Globalization can be. We've been playing NZ games since history began. E.g., hunter-gatherer societies are held together because it's a NZ game. History advances because technology enables poeople to play NZ games over greater distances. [POPTECH] Kling on PopTech Bobos
Arnold Kling feels that the PopTechians are a smug bunch o' angry, liberal white guys. He was particularly bothered by Larry Lessig's showing a clip of Bush and Blair video-manipulated into singing a love duet. Arnold felt that the political bias was unnecessary; had it made fun of Hillary, we would have reacted differently, he says. Well, yes, there is a general ethos at PopTech, but maybe not as uniform as Arnold thinks. For one thing, Bob Metcalfe is one of the organizers and he's not shy about his support of the Bush administration. Nevertheless, if you randomly tell...

Elections in Azerbaijan
Some of you may know that on October the 15th elections were held in Azerbaijan. With the current president and former head of the Azerbaijan branch of the KGB, Heydar Aliyev, undergoing medical treatment at age 80ish, the decision has been made to pass on the reins of the country to his son, Ilham Aliyev, widely considered to be a playboy fool. The only problem with this dynastic succession is that Azerbaijan is ostensibly a democracy.

[POPTECH] Tech and Global Health
Sally Stansfield of the Bill & Melinda Gates Fund is talking about how technology can be used to improve health globally. It's been 50 years since the development of the polio vaccine but it's still a threat in much of the world. A child born in the developing world has a 1:6 of dying before age 5. More than 800,000 kids die from measles every year. 25% of the world's kids are moderately or severely malnourished. Less than half of people at risk of AIDS can't get condoms. Health is a public good gone global, which means that governments, with...

[POPTECH] Reconciliation Ecology
Michael Rosenzweig is depressing us with facts about our destruction of our shared ecology. Preserving tracts of lands as parks and reserves is not enough, he argues. Global warming will destroy the parks; Australia has discovered that 95% of its preserves and parks will be under water with global warming. [How many degrees are we talking about?] The more area of wilderness, the more species. But we can learn to reengineer our habitats, conserving species diversity, and we can do it where we live. Michael calls this "reconciliation ecology" because it reconciles our needs with those of the div

I've been thinking more and more about how to mine the possibilites of RSS for teachers. There are a lot of obvious applications: tracking student work in Web logs, being able to scour Websites for school info, communicating with parents, etc. But I think there are a lot of ways to embed it into good practice as well. One of the areas I want to delve into more is the creation of news feeds for Feedster or Goolge Alerts. I've been setting up feeds for weblogs and journalism, weblogs and education, educa
