So I have this from an extremely reliable source, who vouches totally for the facts that follow. Story one: Last month while visiting Charleston, three women went into a Starbucks. They were spending the weekend together and one of them had a disposable camera with her. To commemorate their time with one and other they decided to take round robin pictures while sitting around communing. The manager evidently careened out of control, screaming at them, "Didn't they know it was illegal to take photographs in a Starbucks. She insisted that she had to have the disposable came

Sebastian begins by wondering if the usual educational assumption that learning is done to us by experts helps us become truly educated. He refers to some psychological theories of the 1950s that look to conversation as the way in which we build up an understanding of our self and world. [BlogTalk] Oliver Wrede: Discourse and Weblogs
Oliver Wrede sets up weblogs for university courses. He asks students to take charge of particular topics, stimulating posts. Courses are linear and end when they end. Oliver would like to find a way to create loop so it won't come to a screeching halt. So, he's making a knowledgebase, feeding into new courses what's been learned from previous ones. In fact, it stimulates new courses. In fact, after the course ends, the weblog continues. 80% of the visitors come from Google searches. See here and here. He looks at the posts between Winer and Palfrey about blogging the...

Web logs as Articulation Tools
One interesting off shoot of the recent interest in Web logs here has been their potential in terms of articulation through the sending districts. We have four districts that feed their kids to us and it's an ongoing struggle to try to make sure all of those students have similar skills and experiences. The supervisors in the different districts hardly ever talk to one another except for tri-annual meetings here with the department supervisors. This week I spoke with both the Science and Social Studies supervisor groups about the concept of Web logs as learning object repositories and as

Mr. Gates' spam proposal
Mr. Gates has proposed his
solution
to spam. Unfortunately, it is yet another idea that will not work. The problem the MSFT solution aims to solve is the problem of distinguishing good spam from bad. The proposal has a clever (though I think dangerous) safe harbor provision to "create incentives for email marketers to adopt best practices, and to certify themselves as trusted senders who can be more easily identified by consumers and filters alike." Presumably, if we know which marketers are "trusted senders" we can

I just found out that I'll be heading to WWDC2003 this year (June 23 - 27). This is the most amazing conference I've seen, with an extremely diverse mix of folks (from MS R&D to indy developers). The sessions are all top-knotch, and it's more than a little like drinking from a firehose. Can't wait to see what's coming in MacOSX (I remember the Quartz Extreme demo last year, and that was freakin' amazing...) and WebObjects specifically. Hopefully, we'll be able to demo CAREO/Extreme, or at least the XStreamDB EOAdaptor. I guess we've got a month t

Reality Weblogging
There's been some discussion recently among

about whether they should keep the content of their weblogs strictly "business" and not interject other topics or their personal views. My take on this is, unless one is using the weblog to promote a particular agenda, most who choose to read a weblog would also expect to see the "real you" shine through from time to time. We are educators, and educators have rich, multifaceted lives. There's too much "narrowcasting" go

Panel 1 discussion: Meaning in weblogs
People are discussing how complexity is managed by weblogging and if semantic web or a blogsphere map do really create »meaning« or just another form of quantity. My take on that: »Meaning« is not something outside anybodies head. It is cronstructed. The question is which strategies we have quired to construct that meaning. It might be the case that we create meaning by relation inbetween concepts. Recording a semantic network tries to record that relations. If they have meaning is not a question of what is in the semantic web database - but still what

Casting a Wider Net to Attract Computing Women - KATIE HAFNER, New York Times
For years, the problem has been referred to, tongue in cheek, as the Dave-to-Girl ratio. To track Carnegie Mellon University's progress in attracting female undergraduates to its School of Computer Science, faculty, staff and students there have kept count of the number of men named Dave versus the number of women.

Online Testing in the K-12 Sector Grows Out of Necessity - Ben Macklin, emarketer
The No Child Left Behind Act 2001, signed into law in the US by President Bush in 2002 requires educators to test all third through eighth graders in reading and mathematics annually. The new legislative requirements have set schools scrambling to find more efficient ways to assess academic skills and get children ready for state exams, so many are experimenting with new ways of using technology to assist them.

Online Learning Fills Void in Nations Coping With SARS - Rhea R. Borja, Education Week
Over the past two months, schools throughout Beijing, Hong Kong, and Singapore looked like mini-ghost towns: empty, silent classrooms, deserted hallways, and vacant playing fields. The steep escalation of people contracting the potentially fatal respiratory illness known as SARS forced many government and school officials in Asia to close school for more than 2 million students.

The Blogosphere Map is a tool for spreading the spread of ideas throughout a blogging community. Browsing gives a "worm's eye view." We need a bird's eye view. Weblogs are a self-refererring medium. Weblogs are like the brain in terms of the density of interconnections that reflects not only events in the real world but also parses ideas and concepts that come from the blogosphere itself. The Map supports the self-organization of the blogosphere, better than using complex ontologies. [He looks at Steve Cayzer who just spoke about the semantic web, but Steve favors the self-organizing

Steve Cayzer from HP is talking about semantic blogging. He's working on an HP Labs project on the semantic web. "Blogging is cool but it could be even cooler...using semantic web techniques." (I enjoyed talking with Steve at last night's dinner.) Semantic blogging would enable us to view blogs other than reverse chronological order, to do semantic navigation (made possible by attaching meanings to links), and do semantic queries, asking who's blogging on a particular item. To do this, we need a way to share meaning context. That means not just metadata but metadata described by
